This decision comes after an incident last month where services were delayed at OnPassive station due to an electric scooter that began smoking on the platform. The RTA cited safety concerns as the reason for the ban, as the lithium-ion batteries in electric scooters can occasionally overheat and catch fire. While convenient for last-mile transportation, scooters can pose risks in confined underground metro stations. The Dubai metro and tram systems are following the lead of other major cities that have prohibited electric scooters on public transit due to fire and injury hazards. Riders will need to find alternative modes of transportation to complete their commute if part of their journey relies on the metro or tram.
